Calgary Transit makes changes to service to deal with COVID-19

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary Transit is making some changes to try and help ease the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning March 20, Calgary Transit is asking all of its customers to board its buses using the rear doors.

The change is in an effort to keep bus operators safe while also reducing the amount of traffic through the front portion of the bus.

Now, giving in your bus tickets will run on an honour system.

Calgary Transit is asking anyone who boards the bus with a single-use ticket to rip up the ticket once you board. It is also asking customers to purchase tickets from machines when possible.

“Through this difficult time, we thank Calgarians for being honest and paying their fares,” said Russell Davies, Acting Director, Calgary Transit. “This is an honour-system approach. Let’s come together as a community to keep our city safe.”

Those who require accessible boarding will still be given access to board through the front doors of the bus.

On top of this, Calgary Transit Access will be limiting the number of people onboard down to just two people.

“By limiting the number of shared rides for registered customers with disabilities who cannot take Calgary Transit, we can keep our commitment of customer safety by helping reduce contact between customers,” CTA said in a release.

As the COVID-19 situation escalates, CTA says it has seen a decrease in service usage so it doesn’t anticipate impacts to service delivery.
