This year, LGBTQ2 kids' rights are on the ballot
This year, the safety of LGBTQ2 kids in Alberta is on the ballot.
It shouldn’t be. Children aren’t political footballs. But an organized lobby is pressuring school board trustees and trustee candidates to adopt a spiteful policy meant to hurt them.
They’re the ones supporting Jason Kenney and the extremist wing of the UCP who want teachers to ‘out’ students who participate in GSA (gay-straight-alliance) clubs on campus.
Even though those GSA clubs have been shown to significantly reduce the rates of suicide and self-harm among vulnerable kids.
And now they’re trying to push this policy at the school board level too.
In Edmonton, an EPSB member was so concerned about the effort to ruin GSAs that they put forward a motion to re-affirm the school board’s support for GSAs. The lobby groups ran a pressure campaign and got three trustees to scuttle the motion.
Are those trustees against LGBTQ2 kids? Or did they just not have the courage to not be spooked by a handful of email form letters?
Either way, they’re not alone – the lobbyists have candidates in nearly every ward who are supporting their ‘out kids’ policy.
School board trustee elections often don’t get a lot of attention but you do have a vote and you do have a voice.
If these lobbyists get their way, they’ll stack the Edmonton Public School Board with anti-LGBTQ2 trustees.
Everyone in Edmonton needs to stand up and resist this campaign to take over our school boards.
We’ve been following this campaign and we can keep you up to date. Sign up today and we’ll put you in touch with the candidates in your ward that have committed to protecting GSAs and vulnerable students. If you're already signed up for our newsletter, fill this out too, so we know you want information on this specific issue.
These lobbyists think they can take over our school boards while no one is paying attention. But we are paying attention. And there’s more of us than there are of them.
